Your Don't Starve Together server
The Klei server token every server needs, how players join, and what's on the Game Settings page. Your server runs two worlds: the surface and the caves below it.
Get your Klei server token
Klei, who make Don't Starve Together, only list a server that has a token from a player's Klei account. It's free and takes about 2 minutes:
- Go to accounts.klei.com and sign in, with Steam or however you play.
- Open Games, then Don't Starve Together Servers.
- Press Add New Server, give it any name, and copy the token it shows. It starts with
pds-g^KU_. - Paste it when you order, or later on Your servers. It's saved in your server's Game Settings (under Basics, Klei server token), where you can change it.
Use a new token for each server, and keep it to yourself: anyone with it can run a server listed under your Klei account. If one leaks, delete it on the same Klei page and add a new one.
Join
Your servers shows everything players need.
- Server browser: in Don't Starve Together, open Browse Games and search for your server's name. It shows up about a minute after the server starts.
- Password: players type it when they join. Your server gets one when you order it; change it, or clear it for none, on Game Settings.
- Straight to the address: open the in-game console with the ~ key and type the
c_connect(...)line from Your servers. That works even when the browser is slow to list it.
Game Settings
In the game panel, open your server and go to Game Settings. Settings are in groups you open one at a time. Each saves as soon as you change it and takes effect the next time the server starts: restart it from the console page.
- Basics: name, description, password, max players, playstyle, player versus player, pausing while nobody is on, the caves, the Klei token and the language.
- Players: admins, bans, reserved slots, Steam group rules, votes and idle kicks. See below.
- Server: which world to play, saving, updates per second, and updating DST on every start.
- Mods: see Mods.
- World rules to Lunar mutations: the same world settings as DST's own Host Game screen, under the same names. See World settings.
- New world groups: what a new world is made with. They change nothing in a world that already exists.
LoomNode writes the game's own setting files (cluster.ini, server.ini, worldgenoverride.lua and the lists) from Game Settings at every start, so change settings there: edits to those files are replaced.
Playstyles
The playstyle is a starting point for every world setting. Each world setting can still be changed on its own: Default means whatever the playstyle sets.
| Playstyle | What it means |
|---|---|
| Survival | DST as it comes. When everyone is dead, the world starts over. |
| Endless | The world never starts over. Ghosts can revive at the Florid Postern, and resources grow back. |
| Relaxed | Like Endless, and hunger, cold, heat and darkness can't kill you; fewer hound attacks. |
| Lights Out | Always night. |
| Wilderness | No portal: everyone starts somewhere random, and dying means a new character. |
World settings
- World rules to Lunar mutations (seasons, day length, regrowth, animals, monsters, bosses and the rest) apply to the world you play now, from its next start.
- New world groups (world size, resources, animals and monsters placed at the start) are only used when a world is made. To use new ones, set Server, World name to a new name and start: a new world is made with them, and the old one stays saved under its name.
- A setting marked (surface) or (caves) only exists in that world.
Admins, bans and who can join
The lists take Klei IDs, separated by commas. They look like KU_ab12CD34; each player finds theirs in game under Account, or at accounts.klei.com.
- Admins: they get the admin menu in game (kick, ban, roll the world back) and the console commands.
- Banned players: they can't join. Bans an admin makes in game are kept too.
- Reserved slots: keep some of the places free for the players you list, so they can always get in.
- Only members of a Steam group: with a Steam group ID set, everyone else is turned away.
Mods
- Workshop mods: the Steam Workshop IDs of the mods you want (the number at the end of a mod's page address), separated by commas.
- Workshop collection: a public collection's ID; every mod in it is downloaded and turned on. Mods that only change what a player sees run on players' own games, not the server.
- Mods download when the server starts, so the first start with new ones takes longer. Players get them on their own when they join.
- Every mod runs with its normal options. To set them yourself, turn on I set up mod options myself, then edit
modoverrides.luain your world'sMasterandCavesfolders (inDoNotStarveTogether/config/, then your world's name). - A broken or outdated mod can stop the server from starting: take it out and start again.
Saving and backups
- The world saves at the start of each in-game day, and when the server stops. Rollback points to keep is how many days back an admin or a vote can roll it.
- LoomNode backs your server up every night and keeps the last 2 that fit in your storage, on a separate machine. Restore them from Backups in the game panel.
- A normal restore brings the world back as it was in the backup. The saves made after it are moved into
DoNotStarveTogether/LoomNode-replaced-saves, not deleted, in case you want them back. - Backups leave out the game itself, which Steam puts back. After a restore with Delete files first, reinstall the server once (Settings, Reinstall server): your worlds and settings stay.
Bring your own world
- In the game panel, stop your server.
- On your computer, find the world in
Documents/Klei/DoNotStarveTogether: a folder of numbers, thenCluster_1(or another number) withMasterandCavesinside. - Upload that cluster folder's contents into
DoNotStarveTogether/config/plus a new name, likeDoNotStarveTogether/config/home, with the game panel's file manager or SFTP. - On Game Settings, set Server, World name to that name (
home), then start the server. Its settings come from Game Settings, so set the playstyle and world settings to match first.
Good to know
- Everyone needs the same DST version as the server. The server updates itself each time it starts; restart it after a DST update.
- Caves off runs only the surface, with less memory and CPU.
- Pause when nobody is on stops days passing while the server is empty. It's on unless you turn it off.
- Stuck? Email support@loomnode.cloud or ask on Discord.
