Your Valheim server
How players join, what's on the Game Settings page, and what each difficulty choice really does. The numbers here were read from real worlds on a LoomNode server, not copied from other guides (they disagree).
Join
Your servers shows everything players need: the join code, the address and the password.
- Join code: works for everyone, on Steam, Xbox, PlayStation and Game Pass. In Valheim, pick your character, open Join game, press Join IP and type the code. It usually stays the same, but Valheim sometimes makes a new one, after a restart or a network hiccup, so if it stops working, check Your servers for the current one.
- Address: for Steam players, the same way: Join IP, then the address, like
play.loomnode.cloud:21010. It stays the same. - Server list: if Show in the server list is on, your server is under Valheim's Community tab by its name.
- Password: players type it when they join. Your server gets one when you order it; change it on Game Settings. It has to be 5 to 20 letters, numbers,
-or_, and Valheim refuses one that contains the server's name.
Console players (Xbox, PlayStation) can only join while Allow console and Game Pass players is on. It is, unless you turn it off.
Game Settings
In the game panel, open your server and go to Game Settings. Each setting saves as soon as you change it, and takes effect the next time the server starts: restart it from the console page.
- Basics: the server's name, which world to play, the password, the server list and console players.
- Players: admins, banned players, and who can join. See below.
- Difficulty: an overall difficulty, and each of its parts on its own. See Difficulty.
- World rules: switches like free building, no map, or fire that spreads. See World rules.
- Saving: how often the world saves, and Valheim's own world backups.
- Updates: Valheim updates itself each time it starts. To play Valheim's public test, set the game version to
public-test; everyone joining then needs the public test too.
World: a new name starts a new world, and the old ones stay saved. Set the old name back to play it again.
Admins, bans and who can join
Each list takes player IDs, separated by commas. Every player finds theirs by pressing F2 in game; it looks like Steam_76561198000000000. Console players have IDs too, starting with their platform's name.
- Admins (can kick and ban): admins open the console with F5 (Valheim only opens it if you start the game with
-console: in Steam, right-click Valheim, then Properties, and add it under Launch options) and typekick, banorunbanwith a player's name or ID.bannedlists the bans. - Banned players: they can't join. Bans an admin makes in game are kept as well. Taking someone out of this list lifts a ban that came from it; a ban made in game is lifted with
unbanin game. - Only these players can join: if anyone is listed here, everyone else is turned away. Leave it empty to let in anyone with the password.

Overall difficulty is a starting point. Each part below it can still be changed on its own: Default means whatever the overall difficulty sets.

Raids on your base
How often the game checks for a raid, compared with normal: Much less 200% of the time between checks, Less 150%, More 60%, Much more 30%. None turns raids off; monsters still spawn at night.
Portal rules
- Casual: carry anything through portals, metal and ore too.
- Hard: portals stop working while a boss fight is on.
- Very hard: no portals at all.
World rules
The first five can be set by the overall difficulty too, so they read Default, On or Off. Off always wins, even over the difficulty.
- Free building: build without materials.
- Raids follow each player: raids depend on each player's own progress, not the world's.
- Peaceful enemies: enemies only attack when attacked first.
- No map: no map and no minimap.
- Fire spreads everywhere: wood can catch fire and spread anywhere, not only in the Ashlands.
- Free crafting, No workbench needed, All building pieces unlocked, All crafting recipes unlocked and Build inside dungeons do what they say.
- Purely random rare drops: normally a rare drop gets a little likelier each time you miss it. On, every drop is pure chance.
Saving and backups
- Valheim saves the world every 30 minutes, and when the server stops. Change how often under Saving.
- Valheim also keeps a few copies of the world next to it (4 by default): the first after 2 hours, then one every 12 hours.
- Separately, LoomNode backs your server up every night and keeps the last 2 that fit in your storage, on a separate machine. Restore them from Backups in the game panel. A nightly backup holds the world as of its last save.
Bring your own world
- In the game panel, stop your server.
- On your computer, find your world: two files named after it, ending in
.fwland.db. On Windows, type%userprofile%\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\worlds_localinto File Explorer's address bar. - Upload both files into
.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/worlds_localon your server, with the game panel's file manager or SFTP. - On Game Settings, set World to your world's name (the file name without
.fwl), then start the server.
Good to know
- Every player needs the same Valheim version as the server. The server updates itself each time it starts; restart it after a Valheim update.
- Mods aren't supported yet: the server runs Valheim as it comes.
- Stuck? Email support@loomnode.cloud or ask on Discord.
